The first sitting of the new bench was held on Monday 23rd October 1893 with the Town Clerk Mr R B Nicholson congratulating the bench on their appointments before commencement of the proceedings. The dubious honour of being the first case heard fell to 2 young women Elizabeth Aldred (16) and Alice Marjoram (17) who had been held on remand since the previous Thursday for sleeping in an outhouse in Christ Church Square. They were discharged without charge after the Chairman of the bench had commented on what a sad case it was. The other cases heard on that first day were for (i) drunk and disorderly, (ii) theft and (iii) threatening behaviour.
