This collaboration between David Butcher and Ivan Bunn (text by the former, illustrations by the latter) looks at the fire of March 1645, which devastated the middle part of the High Street. Using an account of the damage given in the Lowestoft Town Book and reproduced in Gillingwater’s history of the town, the publication considers the extent and the effect of the disaster in social, economic and topographical terms. Information regarding Lowestoft’s other notable fires is also given, as well as a summative comment on urban conflagrations in the England as a whole.
